Dedicated to the memory of Alan

This site is a tribute to Alan, who was born on June 09, 1945. He is much loved and will always be remembered.

We will always remember and be inspired by his optimism and positive outlook.

An avid cricket fan, Alan was happiest surrounded by loved ones (and wine!) at the cricket. His spiritual home was Lords cricket ground. A close second, and real labour of love, was Sunderland football team.

Successful in his professional life, Alan gained a PhD in his thirties and went on to run hospital trusts, finishing up working in consultancy. He dedicated his life to making the NHS a better and more future proofed British institution.

Alan left behind a loving wife in Lois Anne, four children, Daniel, Rebecca, George and James, and one grandchild, Lila, as well as wider family, many friends and colleagues.

We were inspired by Alan's courage, spirit and endless optimism. We will never forget you.

So, on a very sad anniversary here are some new lyrics to a song by The Kinks; one of Alan's favourite groups. I'd like to think Alan would approve. For my sister. I met her in a place called the N.H.S. Where you take your sick and they do their best, you tried Lois I see a girl Lo-is She walked up to me and she asked me out I asked her her name and in her sweetest voice She said Lo-is, L-O, L-O Lo-is Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Well I’m not the world’s most physical guy But when she squeezed me tight she nearly split my wine Oh my Lois Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Well, I’m not dumb but I can’t understand Why she don’t play my game like the one I play Su do ko, Su Su Su Su doko Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lois Well we drank our wine and ate all night In Carheivo under the starlight She picked me up and sat me on her knee And said little boy you must come away with me Well I’m not the world’s most passionate guy But when I looked in her eyes Well I really fell for my Lois Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Well that's the way that I want it to stay. And I always want it to be that way, for my Lois. Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Lo-is, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo, Lo-is [Fade]

Many years ago Alan and Lois came up North to Hull to stay over before going the next day with me, Chris and Jez to Headingley for the test match. We went to a restaurant the night before the cricket. At the bar, Alan produced his Robin Smith impression, swinging an imaginary bat and cutting the ball to the off side (and almost clearing the bar in the process). He then lit up a huge cigar (allowed in those days!) and filled the bar area with dense smoke - exclaiming in a loud voice - "I know it's anti-social, but I don't fxxxxxxxx care!!!. The food was good but we did not dare go back. His kid brother Phillip
